Jim Larkin in his Memorable Fight for the Rights of Workers

Activism

Jim Larkin is a native of England. He was born in Liverpool in the year 1876 in January. He is the man known to have established the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. The union was at that time the largest in the region.

The ITGWU afterwards came to dissolve as the Dublin Lockout came in. This led Jim to leave for the United States. However, he would come to be deported later. He grew up as a Marxist and his influence in the labor rights field was felt till the 1940s.

Jim grew up in in England in the slums and went through the hardships therein. As a result, Jim Larkin was unable to access the formal education like his peers. As he worked in the docks, he was able to realize the hardship and oppression the workers underwent. He decided to join the National Union of Dock Laborers as a socialist who had a strong belief on the unfair treatment of the workers. In the year 1905, he decided to join in on a fulltime basis and involved himself in organizing the union.

The NUDL has realized the influential tactics used by the militant strike method and decided to send him to the Dublin in 1907. While there, he founded he founded the great Irish Transport and Workers Union. The great role of the Union was to bring together all the workers-both the skills and the unskilled to form an organization. In the later years, Larkin conducted several strikes under his party Irish Labor Party.

The party managed to conduct the major striker that lasted for eight months. The strike that occurred in 1913 and included a total of 100000 workers, at the end managed to bring in reformations in the rights of the work.

Jim Larkin was also in involved in the development of the court of anti-world war demonstrations in Dublin and moved to the United States to collect funds for the war against Britain.

Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund Trying to Make Lives of Migrants Better in the United States

Activism

There are millions of people across the world who is suffering due to human right violations, political unrest, terrorism, poverty, food shortage, lack of medical assistance, and more. These people are in need of help, and it is what the charity organizations provide.

Some of the notable charity organizations that have a presence in many countries across the globe are Amnesty International, Child Rights Information Network, Human Rights Watch, Human Rights First, International Federation for Human Rights, World Organization Against Torture, Human Rights Group, and more.

These organizations help in rehabilitating people in distress in various poverty and terrorism affected regions in the world. Many of the times, the volunteers working in these organizations even put their lives in danger to reach out to the people. It is such dedication that is needed to make the world a better place.

In the United States, the political situation seems stable, but there is a lot of dissatisfaction among the certain sections of the people as to where the country is heading and the decisions made by the government. Read more: Jim Larkin | Angel.co

One of the sections of the people who are apparently unhappy with the reforms made by the present government and how the authorities, including the law enforcement agencies, are handling their situations, is migrants and refugees.

People arriving from other countries with supporting documents and having equal rights as any other American have reported being mistreated by the authorities. There is a racial disparity that has penetrated deep into the American society and the general notion against the immigrants, migrants, and the refugees, is unfair.

And, quite naturally, it is not a generalized sentiment, but the reports of discriminatory treatment by law enforcement agencies, police, and other authorities towards migrants are increasing with every passing day.

Two of the social and political activists namely Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have been trying hard to help the Hispanic community in Arizona. They have seen how the Mexicans who cross the border in search for better lives have been mistreated by the law enforcement agencies, even those who are legal migrants.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey co-own Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media that has been actively highlighting the misadministration in the law enforcement agencies in the state of Arizona, particularly under the management of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, which is what led to their arrest.

They were arrested without any valid or legal reason and thus, there was a national unrest that followed their arrest. Consequently, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were released from jail within a day and in the lawsuit, they filed against the state, they were compensated with $3.75 million by the state.

The fund they received in compensation was made into Frontera Fund, which is dedicated to helping the migrants and human rights abuse victims.

Many of the migrants have been jailed wrongfully and are in need of legal assistance, and it is what Frontera Fund can help in financing. Frontera Fund would also help in upholding the First Amendment Rights and migrant rights in the country.

The Frontera Fund and Front Page Confidential – How were they Founded?

The Frontera Fund is a charitable fundraising organization founded by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. It was founded with the purpose to counteract the damage done by former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Since around 2005 Joe Arpaio had been using the Hispanic resident of Arizona to make a name for himself. Now The Frontera Fund is working to improve the lives of those targeted by the former sheriff.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin also created Front Page Confidential, a newspaper. The two are no strangers to the journalism world. They co-owned the Phoenix New Times previously. They began their business relationship way back in college. They worked together to distribute a newsletter that gave alternative views to the school’s conservative stance on student protesting.

The journalists were able to create these two new organization because of a lawsuit. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were awarded $3.75 million. The lawsuit was a result of their illegal arrest back in 2007 by Joe Arpaio. Joe Arpaio arrest them because they published something he didn’t agree with in the Phoenix New Times.

About Joe Arpaio

Joe Arpaio was the Sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years. Despite his horrible actions, citizens continued to vote him back into office. Joe Arpaio has been accused of intimidating and threatening political rivals as well. Just a year after taking office, in an attempt to combat prison over-population, he created Tent City. Arpaio himself described it as a concentration camp.

2007 wasn’t just the year he violated Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin’s first amendment. He also illegally arrested a Mexican tourist that eventually led to Arpaio being charged with criminal contempt of court;however, Donald Trump pardoned him of the crime.

Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund and Border Angels

Activism, Central America

Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund is a movement meant to act as a voice for the voiceless and the less fortunate in the society. Jim and Michael have once worked as journalists and they encountered people who are discriminated against and have no one to speak for them. Not only have they gotten in touch with such people but they have gone through such circumstances. Read more: Village Voice Media | Wikipedia and Phoenix New Time

When they were journalists they were arrested for no valid reason, giving them more reasons to fight for the voiceless in the society. There are things that happen that are against the law but people in power support them because they have more power than those who are discriminated against.

Lacey and Larkin know that what they are into is not a simple task but they are determined to make it happen. They are focused and determined, knowing that some fay their hard work and commitment will bear fruits. They believe that there is a time when discrimination will be done away with and people will get along regardless of aspects such as gender, age, race, color and social class.

There are other organizations which have a goal similar to create unity in the society and speak for the voiceless. The organization is referred to as border Angels. It is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 by Enrique Morones.

Border Angels is a charitable organization and just like Larkin and Lacey, it was created with the intention of dealing with issues in migrant rights, immigration reforms and preventing the deaths of migrants along the border. Border angles, is involved in educating members of the community as well as creating awareness through programs involving guide trips for migrants.

The guide trips is used to help migrants learn more about the United States –Mexico border policy and learn more about the migrant routes. Migrants are among the people who have their rights violated most of the time. In this case, such organizations are formed to help them.

Border Angels have operated for quite a while since in 2014 they were active during the 2014 American immigration. It is in this case, clear that organizations to support the voiceless in the society have been active for years. During the crisis, children from Central America were seeking to enter the United States and Border Angels distributed more than 45 tons of donated books, toys, food as well as clothing for the migrants.

The organization also ensured that they blocked the way for those who tried to block the migrants. Knowing that they have support from other organizations, Jim and Michael keep on moving hoping for the best.

Larkin and Lacey Launch the Front Page Confidential Website

Larkin and Lacey launched the Front Page Confidential website. The renowned journalists are the publishers; with Tom Finkel working as the editor. The website is a tribute to the freedom of speech. The site is meant for commentaries and news surrounding the freedom of speech. The two are also the brains behind the Frontera Fund

The Frontera Fund

The Frontera Fund looks after the rights of immigrants and minorities whose rights are overlooked or infringed by the authorities. They assist immigrants to process their documentation and represent others in court where there is a need to so. The Fund was started using monies that were paid by the then Maricopa County Sheriff for the wrongful arrests of the two journalists. He sent the county police to raid the apartments of the two journalists and arrested them under the guise that they revealed jury investigation details. However, the charges did not stand the test of the law. The journalists, in turn, sued and accused Arpaio of wrongful arrests and infringing on their rights. The courts sitting in Arizona agreed with the plea and awarded Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey $3.3 million in damages, which was to be paid by Joe Arpaio as a court fine. The journalists directed all the money to start the, now, established Frontera Fund.

Larkin and Lacey Versus Joe Arpaio

Larkin and Lacey are the founders of the Frontera Fund, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to fight for the rights of minorities in Arizona. Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are former journalists and founders of the Village Voice Newspaper that offered the locals around Phoenix area news regarding activities in their county. The journalists also took a special interest in the activities of the county officials including Joe Arpaio. They disclosed the actions of the then Maricopa County Sheriff and explained how he was operating outside the law. They also published news of misappropriation of funds in the Sheriff’s office. Joe Arpaio did not like it.

Halvorssen and the Human Rights Foundation

Activism, Human Rights

Thor Halvorssen has is so committed the international human rights that he works nearly around the clock year round. Halvorssen is founder and president of the New York-based Human Rights Foundation, which he started in 2005. He is half Norwegian and half Venezuelan and descends from a long line of political movers and shakers on both sides. Two primary ideals that have remained important to almost every one of these people is human rights and individual liberty. Commitment to these things has also become very personal to Halvorssen: His father was tortured after exposing corruption in the Venezuelan government and his mother was shot at a human rights demonstration.
The incident with his mother and father are the biggest personal motivators for his drive for human rights, but his cousin is also unjustly imprisoned in Venezuela. Above all, Halvorssen has a commitment to help and deep love for all people. Halvorssen had appointed Vaclav Havel as chairman of Human Rights Foundation. After Havel died in 2011, he replaced him with Garry Kasparov. This has been a very hands on role both for Kasparov and Halvorssen. They have both endured many beatings and physical trials for the cause of human rights.

Thor Halvorssen has also been in some incredibly sticky situations and managed to get himself out of them. He has been involved and continues to be involved in some of the most biggest human rights infringements throughout the world. However, his biggest passion has always been opposition to left-wing Latin American dictators. He has been criticized for his defense of right-wing groups and his fight against left-wing politicians in an industry where the left-wing principle of tolerance is so important. Halvorssen does insist the he is a liberal, but a classical liberal.

But being right or left isn’t that important an issue to Halvorssen. He goes after human rights violations wherever they are found. Most of the politicians he has opposed just happened to be left wing. Halvorssen just guides the ship that is the Human Rights Foundation and its staff of 12 employees. But although they are smaller than other human rights organizations, they usually have bigger international projects.
