A “Closer” look with Alex Pall

When listening to EDM, other than maybe some catch phrase of any kind, it can be difficult to distinguish who the artist is. Of the genres of music that are popular on the radio, EDM artists struggle to create an identity. This is an issue that Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, the two members of The Chainsmokers, are focusing on with their new single “Closer.” The duo have seen massive popularity with their hits such as “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down”, however their new song is different.

It features Taggart singing on the track. In an interview with Interview Magazine, Alex Pall recognizes that artists such as themselves want to put intimacy in their work, but in the EDM genre, DJs can go unknown. Taggart and Pall feel that “Closer” may be a step in the right direction.

The two met in New York City several years back, after being introduced by a mutual friend. They immediately agreed on their visions of the music industry, and began producing the next day. Drew had gone to school at Syracuse University, so the move to the city was easy.

They worked for several years playing in bars and other music venues within in the New York area, and eventually found success with their song “#SELFIE.” WIthin a period of time, they began traveling the world. The duo had more hits such as “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down” but Pall felt that they still weren’t able to express their identity, and were just normal DJs with nothing to stand out for.

The duo released “Closer” yesterday, and Pall, along with Taggart, feels that this song could be the change. It features Halsey on the vocals, but also includes Taggart in more than half of the song. Pall feels that the duo had a lot of emotion on relationships, college, life, and superficiality to express. This song could help listeners find out WHO the Chainsmokers are. If there is a chance for them to be more intimate, “Closer” could be the start of their new identity.

EDM aficionados Alex Pall and Drew Taggert are the EDM duo that formed in 2012. They have produced a string of hits including “Paris,” “Something Just Like This” with Coldplay, “Don’t Let Me Down” with lead singer Daya. Their song the “Closer” owned the Number 1 spot on the charts for three months. Their new hit “Sick Boy,” is a departure from their musical past and it represents the launch of a new music chapter. In an interview, Pall and Taggert shared they do not compromise their craft. They recognize making music is a subjective activity but they hope their music resonates with their fans. The pair keep their music fresh and fun by asking themselves, “What do I want to sing that will speak to my listeners’ heart?” To stay current, Taggert and Pall indicated they push each other and focus on what they want to say and what sounds right to them. Even though hip-hop is overtaking EDM in popularity, the duo feels EDM is still a fantastic genre with exciting things happening now, and that will happen in the future.

During their career, the Chainsmokers have one Grammy award; they a Grammy-nominated song this year, with one song nominated for Song of the Year. Their song 1-800-273-8255 was a collaboration between the duo, Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid. Both Taggert and Pall enjoyed the experience and felt they produced a positive piece of art. The pair continues to push the envelope and step out of their comfort zone to keep their music fresh and exciting. While hip-hop is overtaking EDM in popularity, the duo feels hip-hop cannot match the energy and intensity of EDM. Pall and Taggert feel an exciting future for EDM is on the horizon.

The Roc Nation recording label owned and managed by rapper Jay-Z has recently become the source of much speculation after senior figures from the company were seen leaving the Universal Music Group’s offices in California. Insiders at Live Nation have speculated the management of the concert based company are looking to concentrate more on the touring side of the artists associated with Roc Nation and step away from their recording deal; Desiree Perez has been a trusted advisor to Jay-Z for almost 20 years and has built a reputation as one of the toughest negotiators in the music industry.
